SUZUKA, Japan -- Red Bull driver Mark Webber claimed pole position on Saturday for the Japanese Grand Prix, qualifying ahead of his teammate and runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel for the first time this season. Webber clocked a time of 1 minute, 30.975 seconds at the Suzuka circuit, with Vettel just under two-tenths of a second behind in second place after struggling with his KERS power-boost system. "Sebastian had a problem so its a bit of a hollow pole but you have to grab the opportunities when you can," said Webber, who is leaving F1 at the end of the season. "Its a very nice farewell for me on my final time here at Suzuka and on a phenomenal circuit. It was a real highlight for me. In general weve got a good car for the race." Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was third fastest, followed by Lotus Romain Grosjean and Ferraris Felipe Massa. Mercedes Nico Rosberg was sixth ahead of Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg. Vettel has won three of the past four races in Japan and can clinch his fourth successive world title in Sundays race. The title will be his if he wins and nearest rival Fernando Alonso, who was eighth in qualifying, finishes ninth or worse. Vettel is looking to join Michael Schumacher and Juan-Manuel Fangio as the only men to win four championships in a row. The German, who has a 77-point lead over Alonso, has won the past four races, leading after every lap in each of them. Vettel, who was bidding for his fourth straight pole, was hobbled by a KERS problem on his first lap of the final qualifying session but refused to blame Saturdays finish on his cars technical problems, which initially surfaced in the morning practice. "We had a technical problem this morning but I dont think that made a difference in finding the rhythm," Vettel said. "As a fact, we are on the front row which is a great result for the team." Despite the championship title being on the line, Webber said there was no chance of him intentionally moving aside to help his teammate. "Its not as though its the last race of the year," Webber said. "He has a big lead in the standings so in general well be racing for ourselves tomorrow." Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen qualified ninth while McLarens Jenson Button, who won here in 2001, round out the top 10. The first session of qualifying was noteworthy for a couple of fires. Flames leapt out of the back of Esteban Gutierrezs Sauber when it was inside the garage, forcing the Mexican to hastily jump out of the cockpit, but they were quickly extinguished and he was soon able to get back on the circuit. Jean-Eric Vergnes Toro Rosso came to a halt with flames coming from both rear brakes, with the resulting smoke resulting in a red flag which temporarily halted the session. The Grand Prix Drivers Association said in a statement the drivers will honour Maria de Villota with a moment of silence before Sundays race after the former F1 test driver was found dead in a hotel room in Seville, Spain, on Friday. Her family said an autopsy showed that lingering injuries from her racing accident a year ago likely caused her death. Aaron Lynch Jersey . After two months of mediocrity, perhaps the Washington Nationals have turned the page. Strasburg struck out 11 in seven innings Wednesday night and the Nationals kept the Philadelphia Phillies bats quiet yet again in an 8-4, rain-interrupted win. Roquan Smith Bears Jersey . Philippe Desrosiers stopped 42 shots through overtime and three more in the shootout to pick up his third shutout of the season for Rimouski (31-15-7). Zachary Fucale made 28 saves for Halifax (34-17-3) in the loss. http://www.bearsrookiestore.com/Bears-Chase-Daniel-Jersey/ . -- Canadian Erik Bedard pitched into the fifth inning in his bid to win a spot in Tampa Bays rotation, helping the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Saturday. Cody Parkey Bears Jersey .The Hanwha Eagles said the team was impressed with Morgans contact ability and base-running skills. The 34-year-old debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007 and hit . James Daniels Bears Jersey . Long snapper Patrick Mannelly announced Friday that he is retiring after a 16-year-career with the Bears, a span in which he played in a team record 245 games and snapped the ball 2,282 times. BALTIMORE -- A short and tumultuous work week for the Baltimore Ravens ended with a surprisingly lopsided victory. Playing three days after running back Ray Rice was released, the Ravens got a pair of touchdown passes from Joe Flacco and rolled past the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 26-6 on Thursday night. Rice was reaching the end of a two-game suspension for domestic violence when a video of him striking his then-fiancee surfaced Monday. By the end of the day, the three-time Pro Bowler had been cut by Baltimore and suspended indefinitely by the NFL. The media immediately descended upon the teams training complex, and the line of questioning had little to do with this heated AFC North rivalry. The Ravens (1-1) shrugged off the distraction to bounce back from a season-opening loss at home to division rival Cincinnati. Bernard Pierce took over for Rice to gain 96 yards on 22 carries as part of a ground game that finished with 157 yards. Flacco went 21 for 29 for 166 yards and two TD throws to tight end Owen Daniels, and Justin Tucker kicked four field goals. Pittsburgh (1-1) managed only two field goals and committed three turnovers -- one that halted its opening drive, another that set up a fourth-quarter field goal by Tucker, and an interception by Ben Roethlisberger with 1:51 remaining. It was only the second time in the last 11 regular-season meetings between the teams that the outcome was decided by more than three points. Roethlisberger completed 22 of 37 ppasses for 217 yards.dddddddddddd It was the first time since Nov. 26, 2006, that Baltimore held Pittsburgh without a touchdown. After Tucker kicked a 23-yard field goal for a 20-6 lead, Steelers tight end Heath Miller fumbled on a hit by rookie C.J. Mosley, who took the loose ball to the Pittsburgh 20. That led to a 22-yarder by Tucker with 11:14 left. Although the Rice video and the reaction was the talk of Baltimore for much of the week, a few fans showed their loyalty to the banished running back by wearing his No. 27 jersey. But the crowd of 71,181 was quick to turn its attention to on-field action at the opening kickoff. Aided by a roughing the passer call against Courtney Upshaw on the third play of the game, Pittsburgh held the ball for more than eight minutes before Justin Brown fumbled and Baltimore recovered at its own 15. The Ravens then moved 85 yards in 12 plays with the help of two Pittsburgh penalties, the last a 23-yard pass interference call against Cortez Allen that set up a 2-yard touchdown pass from Flacco to Daniels. Pierce and Justin Forsett combined for 32 yards on Baltimores next series, which ended in a field goal for a 10-0 lead. Pittsburgh finally broke through with 2:50 left in the half, getting a field goal to cap an 11-play, 73-yard drive. It was 10-6 before Flacco connected with Daniels on a 1-yard touchdown pass to cap an 80-yard drive highlighted by Flaccos 24-yard completion to tight end Dennis Pitta.
